Final Ancillary Project.

This is the front cover of the digi-pack I have created. 

This is the 1st insert of the digi-pack, including an image and the lyrics of
firework.

This is the 2nd insert of the digi-pack, including images, Katy Perry's signature
and a thank you to Candy Floss Productions.

This is the back cover of the digi-pack, including an image, name, websites,
bar code, the songs on the disk, logo and name of Katy Perry's management team
and the production team.

Ancillary Task

Shots and Locations Used

Performance Shot 1: Mid shot. We used this shot as
a basic performance shot that we could occasionally go
back to in between looking through the narrative and other
performance shots. 

Performance shot 1: Close Up. We filmed this performance
shot again as a close up as it creates more variety of shots
throughout the video and sticks to the conventions of our
chosen genre as they use a variety of shot types of similar
performance shots. 

Performance shot 2: Mid Shot. This shot includes me singing
in a more scenic setting as we wanted to pick a scenic
location to fit the conventions of our chosen music genre.

Performance shot 3/Narrative: Mid Shot (Straight on) This
shot includes me singing as well as using narrative
in the background. We did this as we looked at other
videos of our genre and a lot of their performance shots
included narrative as well.

Performance shot 3/Narrative: Mid Shot (From side) We
filmed this performance shot again from the side as this way
we could show more of the narrative in the background.

Narrative 1: This shot was of a girl upset, she soon realises
there is nothing to be upset about as she clears her face
of tears, takes a deep breath and walks out of the
bathroom.

Narrative 2: This shot is of a boy being bullied at school
by older boys, the boys look through his pockets and push
him against the lockers until he plucks up the courage to
push them away and worries them with his amazing
magic tricks.

Narrative 3: This shot is of a boy sat in his kitchen as his
dad fights with his mum. He sits and tries to carry on
reading, but as the fight becomes more aggressive, he
realises he should help to save his mum from being hurt
and stands up to pull his dad off of her.

We Crowdsource!!

As part of our audience feedback, we set up a facebook group to be able to collect research into clips that we have already put together and how the audience feel about them.

We uploaded clips that we already put together to see how the audience responded to them.

We set up a questionnaire using surveymonkey.com and set up a link to it on our facebook page that the audience can click on and give feedback.

Narrative Scenes

The above clip has been put together by myself and Will to show a scene of domestic violence in a home where a young boy finds it hard to concentrate as his Dad acts angrily towards his Mum. In our chosen video, we see a range of issues and problems that occur in life and how the victims of these situations over come them. Here we have shown that the boy finds it hard at home, but quickly realises he can stand up to protect his mum. This scene links in with the theory of Equilibrium by Toderov, where the beginning of the scene is content, an incident happens in between and results in a similar ending but with a different end result.

The above screen shots are from Katy Perry's original video of 'Firework'. We worked from these screen shots to create our own story board and shots when filming the video clip above.

This scene shows a clip of a boy being mugged. Again, we have shown how the boy defeats the men who mug him by stunning them with magic tricks. This links in with the narrative Katy Perry has shown in her own video but we have developed it to make it our own. Katy Perry has used the word 'Firework' as a metaphor to suggest that people become "fireworks" when they over come their own issues and problems. We have shown this here when they boy defeats the men mugging him.

As a lot of the video includes fireworks and other lighting and scenery I have used this book to guide me through step by step 'home movie' effects.

I have broken up the first 30 seconds of the video 'Firework' by Katy Perry into the different shot types and put them in the right sequence so that I can start to make my own story board that reflects the shot types she has used in this video.

The video below is of the song we will be creating our own video to. We have looked at shot types, mise-en-scene including settings, costumes, make-up, props and how expressions and body language changes through out the video.

Video Testing

We did a test video of a Katy Perry song called 'Last Friday Night' so that we could get a feel of how to use different shot types and to try a variety of props and costumes that link in with other Katy Perry videos and her own style.

Time Management

I have set up a time plan so that I can manage my time effectively and make sure I have everything done by a certain time so I don't fall behind when it comes to my deadline.

Props and Accessories

In most of Katy Perry's music videos, she uses props and accessories to make an unrealistic, fantasy setting. She uses props such as sweets/candy, cakes, brightly coloured wigs, lollipops, flowers, coloured fruits and icecream. The screen below shows a moodboard of types of things she uses.

Locations

We have decided to use a variety of locations as in Katy Perry's music videos she has used lots of different settings as her songs are often fast paced and the locations can often flit from one to another. We have looked at settings she used in her videos and the theme of her album. From her previous videos and her current album, we got the feeling that Katy Perry has based her songs on the summer as they are all very happy and upbeat. The summer/happy feeling also comes from the names of some of her songs on her album, such as 'California Girls', 'Teenage Dream' and 'Firework'.
We have now chosen to do 'Firework' so we have looked really closely at the story of the song and have chosen locations to match this. We are really going to act out a lot of the song as Katy Perry does this in this video and all of her other videos that we have watched.

The screen below shows a rough outline of the story board for a music video of a Katy Perry Song called 'Katy Perry. This song doesn't have a music video so we have looked at the lyrics and her other videos to see how we would put together our own video if we were to do this song. This was just to practice our story boarding technique so it would help when we choose the song we will create a video for.
We haven't taken pictures of all the shots as some are repeated. This is a story board to show the shot types and roughly the locations, it doesn't include the costumes or the definate sequence as some of these shots come up more than once in the song.

The following list shows the key things I picked up on when watching a number of Katy Perry's music videos:
-Bright Colours.
-Vibrant, colourful settings.
-Lots of various props used.
-Very random locations.
-Colourful, flamboyant costumes (Very feminine)
-Unrealistic/fantasy settings.
-Very dramatic expressions.
-Narrative is always a big part of the video.

Research

My group first decided to focus on creating a 'pop' genre music video. We then decided to choose a solo female artist as we thought this would work better when syncing the video with the music. We chose to do a female artist as they appeal to both girls and boys at a range of ages and there are more female solo pop artists than there are men. We decided to do Katy Perry as her videos are very dramatic and closely stick to the story of the song so we could use a variety of locations, props and costumes to make up the story of the song.
We haven't yet chosen a song as we want to look through her current videos so that we can choose one that we can make most realistic as her own videos are very surreal, very extravagant, colourful and unrealistic.
